Artist Statement
I make sculpture in the form of vessels. I want to evoke a raw primal memory both viscerally and physically. I like my work to be peculiar, edgy and sometimes dark. The vessel represents the need to fill. It is a container to hold many things both physical and psychological.
Form in my work emerges through the discovery and challenge of construction. The nature of the concern necessitates a variety of stylistic criteria. I work in many medias using different stylistic images to support the philosophical intent of the work. The process creates a vocabulary of materials to deliver the integration of my life experience.
It is important for me to activate the space the way dance does a stage. I use tension, projection, movement fluidity versus stillness, and the juxtaposition of positive and negative space.
Clay is an engaging material: dense, fluid, flowing and light. Working with it is playful, messy, tactile and sensual. I make large works and this is a very physical process for me. I move around the piece. I am never still. I dance.
The artists who have most influenced my creative journey are the abstract expressionists. Abstraction asks the audience to bring a piece of themselves to the artistic narrative. The art is meant to provoke an emotional and personal response.
Many of my sculptures are reminiscent of archaeological remains. For instance, The fin pots look like they were dug up out of the ocean after 100 years. Archaeology poses questions. What culture did they come from? What part did they have in daily life? What are their stories?
Everything is not given. It opens a dialogue. I want the artist and the viewer to have an exchange, a connection. An intimacy occurs that creates a sense of belonging or of being alive. That is what I strive to create, an authentic moment.
Bio
I was a professional dancer for over 20 years. I was a member of the Twyla Tharp Dance Company and was artistic director of my own company “Nina Wiener Dance Company” where I also did the choreography. After a bad injury, I went back to graduate school and became a psychotherapist specializing in artists. During that time I kept looking for an outlet for my creativity. Nothing spoke to me. I finally found clay and I was home again.
